jaya patye madhu mateem vaacham vadatu shantivam.
Atharveda 3.30.2
Let the son obey the dictates of the father. In other words, the son should follow the advice of father. He should possess the mind that is suited and helpful to mother. Wife should talk sweetly and nicely with her husband.
In one Mantra alone the Vedas have beautifully spelt out the duties of husband-wife, Sun-father-Mother. If this advice were to be part of our life the family becomes abode of Heaven here itself. Hell and Heaven are not somewhere at a distant place in the sky. The Heaven is here only. Elaborating the theme of this Mantra, Chanakya says,
Yasya putro vashibhuto bharya chandanugaamini|
vibhave yashcha santutshta tasya svarga ehaiva hee||
Where the son is loyal to father, and where the wife is devoted to husband and where the house is overflowing with money and food, then the heaven is obtained in this world itself.
We come across the explanation of first half of this sloka in Mahabharata also as under.
Yaksh queries Yudistara
Kim swid gurutaram bhumeh kim swidu chhataram cha swat|
Mahabharata. vanaparva313.59
Which is heavier than the earth? Which is taller than the sky? Yudistara replies,
Maata gurutara bhumeh syath pithochhatarastatha|
The honor of Mother is heavier than the earth. Father is taller than the sky.
No other religious books in the world have said so nicely about the service and honor rendered to the parents as Veda does.
In the context of presence of harmony in the family, let us look to another Mantra from Vedas
Upa nah soonavo girah shrinvanthamruthasya ye|
Yajurveda 33.77
Let all, along with my son listen to the God given music of Vedas and cause happiness to us. This is the wish of all parents.
Every young man and woman should study Vedas and should see that no hardships are caused to parents.
In the latter part of Mantra, rules are given to make the family life happy and pleasing. It is necessary that to maintain peace and love in family they always speak to each other nicely and sweetly. No ruckuses occur in family where good speech prevails. Children also imbibe good sanskars. They also learn to talk sweetly and nicely. This way happiness and love overflows in a family.
