How householders should be ?

Yagnam duhanam sadamit prapeenam

Pramaamsam dhenum sadanam rayeenam|

Prajaamritathvamutha deerghamayu

Rayascha poshuraipa tva sadema|| Atharva 11.1.34

How the house of ours should be? In our house Yagnam duhaanaam= Always Yagnas should be on Prapeenam sadam ith= should be centre of opulence and prosperity. Pumaamsam= should be full of men. Dhenum= There should be cows. Prjaamrithtvam= should be in a position to lend immortality to the inmates. Deerghaayuh= the life span of the inmates should be long. Rayascha poshai tva upasadema= There should be a regular prayer to God for the grant of prosperity and richness.

In one Mantra alone how Vedas has given a beautiful picture of a house holder? All the necesscities of a family are reflected in this one Mantra alone. Now look at some more Mantras.

Ime grihaa mayobhuva urjasvanthah paysvantah|

Poornaa vamena thistanthaste no janantvayatah|| Atharva 7.60.2

May this house of ours bring us happiness, be full of heroic men, be complete with good water, Ghee, etc. May this of ours be complete with money earned thru right means. May the guests know these us well.

The house that is complete with richness and prosperity be visited by guests. And the householders should accord respect and love due to them.

Upahootha iha gaava upahootha ajavayah|

Atho annaswa keelaala upahuto griheshu nah|| Atharva7.60.5

How the house of ours should be? It should be a place where cows are welcomed. Sheep and goats also should be there. There must be abundunt rice of satvik nature.

How the rice of ours house should be?

It should be useful to Yagna. Further, it should be sweet and nutritious.

The Heavan is veritably here. It is available in the family. Vedas call the householder Ashram as heavan itself.

Yatra suhadrah sukrutho madanthi vihaaya rogam tanvah svayaah|

Ashlonaa angairhrithaah svarge tatra pashyema pitarau cha putraan||

Atharva 6.120.3

That place where good natured, holy, healthy men, free from physical disabilities and without conceit spend their lives happily is a heavan personified. In that house may of us see the parents and children spending their time happily.

The Vedas ordaining to live in such houses declare,

Ehaiva stam maa vi yaustam vishwamaayurvaishnutam

Kreedantav putranaprithribhimradamaanav svasthakav|| Atharva 14.1.22

Hey couples! Hey the bridegroom and the bride! Both of you live in this house holder ashrama. Never get separated from each other. Spend full life playing with children and grand children. Enjoy the full life blessed with prosperity of house.

Druvaasi dhruvoyam yajamanaonninyathane

Prajaya pashubhibriyaath|

Grithena dyavaa prithivi puryetha mindrasya chadirasi vishvajanasya chaya||

Yajurveda 5.28

Hey the mistress of the house! As you are firm in the house so also the lord of the house is firm with good progeny and cattle. Make note of it that there should be plentyness and richness. Be sure that you are united with Yagna. Be friendly as the earth and the sky remain friendly. Hey the good householder! You are the protector of Soul. You are the remover of dificulties which are natural for mortals. You are the shelter for the people of the world.

In these few Mantras, we could observe how nicely a householder has been described. May God bless us with necessary strength so as to be an exemplary house holder.
