Vedas command that we should possess a healthy and strong physique. Vedas say,
Ashwaanam tanvam kridhi|
Atharvaveda1.2.2
Hey Man! Keep your body as strong as the stone.
Yehashyaanama thistashmaa Bhavathu the tanooh|
Krinvantu Vishwedevaa Ayuste sharadam shatam||
Atharvaveda2.13.4
Hey man! Come here. Step on this stone. Your body must be as strong as stone. May the divine forces like Water, Air, Fire, and Earth cause you to live for full hundred years.
Tva magadashwara|
Atharvaveda 4.17.8
Spend life totally disease free
Vedas do not intend a man to be pale, emaciated, and thin, like a living corpse without virility. Vedas instruct,
Gaathranasya vardataamamshuriva pyayathamayam|
Atharvaveda 5.29.12
May the organs of this man be strong and sturdy. May this man be equal to blossoming Moon. How beautiful is the simile, when it says that man should flourish like a Moon! What a terrible desire?
Not only the body. Each and every organ of the body should be strong and sturdy. How the organs should remain to be?
Vaangma asannaso praanachakshurakshno Shrotham karnayoh|
Apalithaah Keshaah ashonaa danta bahu baahorbalam||
Urvorojo jangyorjavah paadayoh pratistaah|
Aristani me sarvathmaanibristah||
May my mouth be strong. May the nose possess the life, May the hairs not become gray, May the teeth remain without blemish, May the shoulders and thighs possess the strength, May the thighs possess the necessary agility, may the feet be firm and strong, May all the parts of the body be disease free, and may the entire body be without any infirmity.
What noble thoughts are associated with the body? This Mantra should be learnt by rote and keep the body in a good and sound state. The present day youth who get aged rather prematurely should derive necessary inspiration from this Mantra.
We require strength and vitality very much in our life. Without strength nothing could to be accomplished. Vedas suggest a way out to get the required strength.
Devaidarthena manina jangide n mayobhava|
Vishkandam sarvaa rakshamshi vyaayame sahaamahe||
Atharvaveda2.4.4
By practicing the Gem called Brahmacharya as taught by the learned and doing exercises, we should keep away from the germs that destroy the blood and juices of the body. Let us also drive away bad and wicked thoughts.
It is therefore necessary that we practice Brahmacharya and do exercises regularly.
After exercises are done with, we must pray God,
Tanoopaa Agnesi tanvam me paahi
Ayurda agnesi ayurme dehi
varchodaa agnesi varcho me dehee|
Agne ynme tanvaa unam tanva apruna||
Yajurveda3.17
Oh! Agni the Lord! You are our protector, protect the body
Oh the enlightened Lord! You are the grantor of Life and Longevity. Give me life.
Hey the supreme Lord! You are the grantor of radiance. Give me the radiance.
Oh the merciful! Remove whatsoever weaknesses that remain in my body.
After exercises, one must eat good and healthy food.
Grutena tanvam vardayasva|
Yajurveda 12.44
Hey Man! You must eat invariably ghee and food which are as nutritious as Ghee is.
A Vedic follower prays God for strength.
Balam dehi tanooshu nah| Rigveda 3.53.18
O God! Give strength to the body.
Further, he says,
Ajarassaste sakhai syama|
Rigveda 7.54.2
Let us remain always young in your friendship.
We may not get this piece of beautiful thoughts in any books of world’s literature.
Some people are of the opinion that we should not look to body to the exclusion of God. Such people need to remember the Upanishad’s saying.
Nayamatma balaheenena labhyah Munduka 3.2.4
He who is weak does not get God.
