A usual meaning of word 'Snack' among people is junk food but that is incorrect. Basically snack is defined as a light meal, refreshment, small portion of food or drink or something which is readily and easily prepared. It is been termed as junk food because mostly people eat fries, chips, burgers, cheese sandwiches pastries etc as part of snacks. Health foods like raw fruits and vegetables, juices, milk, roasted namkeens, bhuna chana, sprouts, murmura etc are very rarely selected options.

Why people Snack?

  • Busy lifestyle
  • Easily available
  • Satisfy hunger
  • Special Occasions (Movie, cricket match, parties etc)
  • Don’t know how to cook food
  • Habit of munching
  • Diet Control

How to make it part of our Balanced diet?

  • Right timing of food
  • Right selection of food
  • Right amount of food

Everybody in this world is short of time and everybody is keen to learn time management. So in this busy schedule people tend to skip meals as children are getting late for schools and younger ones getting late for office. And as on work they get hungry they munch on unhealthy foods. Thus getting ready a little before will cause you no harm but eating unhealthy foods will definitely going to be, if not now then later but you will.

To satisfy hunger people have to eat something but healthy foods are very rarely selected. People gets inclined more towards the choice of there taste buds rather then listening to there brain as if taste buds is guiding their life. Selection of food should always be with respect to what benefits you'll get after you eat, you need to be selfish and possessive about your health. A wise selection of snack will comprise of all nutrients Carbohydrates, Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals, Fat (not necessary as given in rest of days diet), Water and Fiber.

Amount of food is also a major consideration as people start munching on to the fried or junk foods, they think of having a small quantity but as they have one with natural instinct they tend to eat more and it specially happens with people on diet control. They think of having just a bite of pastry but would end up definitely eating one. So be determined and confident in avoiding those tempting foods because it is very difficult to resist if you had one.

Thus snacking is not only about junk food it’s about the way you select your healthy meal.
